Analysis
Painted between 1818 and 1819, "The Raft of the Medusa" marks the birth of Romanticism in painting. The historical context is a major political scandal during the Bourbon Restoration: the 1816 shipwreck of the frigate Méduse, caused by the incompetence of a captain appointed through royal favor. Abandoned on a makeshift raft, 147 men drifted for 13 days; only 15 survived after experiencing hunger, madness, and cannibalism. Géricault seized this contemporary tragedy to upend the codes of history painting, which had previously only dealt with ancient or religious subjects. The mythological and historical analysis reveals that Géricault transforms this event into a "shipwrecked epic." He does not paint the moment of the wreck, but the moment of false hope: when the survivors spot the Argus on the horizon before it temporarily disappears. It is the height of tension between hope and despair. The work becomes a metaphor for France in 1819, a country adrift after the fall of the Empire, searching for its path in the darkness of political uncertainty. Technically, the work is revolutionary for its macabre realism. Géricault spent months studying amputated limbs and cadavers in his studio to render the color of decaying flesh with scientific accuracy. The palette is intentionally dark, dominated by ochres, browns, and blacks, recalling Caravaggio's tenebrism. The use of bitumen of Judea, though it has caused the canvas to darken over time, lends a tragic depth to the shadows, accentuating the sculptural dimension of the bodies. The psychology of the work explores the full range of human reactions to death. One sees the absolute despair of the old man holding his son's body, the exhaustion of the dying at the base of the raft, and the desperate energy of those rising to signal their presence. The Black man at the top of the human pyramid, Jean-Charles, symbolizes a social rupture: he carries the ultimate hope of the group. Géricault succeeds in painting not heroes, but naked humanity, stripped of all social dignity, facing the indifferent immensity of the ocean.
The Secret
The secrets surrounding the creation of this work testify to Géricault's almost morbid obsession. To achieve absolute authenticity, he had his head shaved and locked himself in his studio on Rue du Faubourg-du-Roule, refusing all visitors. He had a life-sized replica of the raft built by the surviving carpenter of the Medusa, Lavillette. Even more disturbing, he kept human body parts from nearby hospitals to observe their decomposition, a practice that horrified his rare visitors. Recent scientific analysis revealed that the "old man with the son" character is actually a direct reference to the myth of Ugolino, condemned to eat his own children. Preparatory sketches show that Géricault had considered painting cannibalism scenes explicitly before choosing a more symbolic and universal approach. Another secret lies in the models: the dying man on the left, whose body slides into the water, is none other than Eugène Delacroix, Géricault's close friend, who was so impressed by the work that he ran out "like a madman." Finally, the painting contains a hidden political critique. By placing a Black man at the summit of the composition, Géricault, a convinced abolitionist, made a bold statement against slavery. At the time, the work was greeted with a mixture of technical admiration and visceral horror; King Louis XVIII himself reportedly said, "Monsieur Géricault, you have just made a shipwreck that is not one for you," highlighting the artistic success born from national tragedy.
